solar-charging-station2Fill ‘er Up with Sunshine: Green Cities Spark Demand for Solar EV Chargers

It’s known as the Windy City, but its vehicle fleet could someday be powered by the sun.

Chicago unveiled its first solar electric-vehicle charging station this month as part of a campaign to bolster the city’s green cred in its bid to host the 2016 Olympics. The 2.4-kilowatt battery system is small, but it demonstrates how city vehicles might someday be powered by a completely carbon-free fuel source: the sun.

Interesting Facts About Trees

April 11, 2009 by carbonday

Trees are the longest living organisms on the planet and one of the earth’s greatest natural resources. They keep our air supply clean, reduce noise pollution, improve water quality, help prevent erosion, provide food and building materials, create shade, and help make our landscapes look beautiful. Here are some more thought-provoking facts and figures about our oldest citizens and living treasures…trees!
  • The shade and wind buffering provided by trees reduces annual heating and cooling costs by 2.1 billion dollars.
  • Each average-sized tree provides an estimated $7 savings in annual environmental benefits, including energy conservation and reduced pollution.
  • A single tree produces approximately 260 pounds of oxygen per year. That means two mature trees can supply enough oxygen annually to support a family of four!
  • Water originating in our national forests provide drinking water for over 3400 communities, and approximately 60 million individuals.
  • One tree can absorb as much carbon in a year as a car produces while driving 26,000 miles.
  • Over the course its life, a single tree can absorb one ton of carbon dioxide.
  • An average American uses about 750 pounds of paper every year, and 95% of homes are built using wood. That means each person uses the equivalent of one 100 foot tall, 16 inch diameter, tree every year for their paper and wood product needs.
  • About one third of the United States of America is covered by forests.
  • According to the last forest inventory, there are almost 247 billion trees over 1 inch in diameter in the U.S.
  • The average tree in an urban/city area has a life expectancy of only 8 years.
  • The tallest tree in the country is a Coast Redwood growing in northern California’s Redwood National Park. It is 369 feet tall and over 2000 years old!

Chicago Installs Solar Powered Charging Station for Electric Vehicle

(PhysOrg.com) — One of the biggest arguments that some have made against plug-in electric vehicles is that they still promote the use of fossil fuels. When you have to plug in a car for a charge, the electricity used to charge the battery often comes from a power plant that gets its energy from oil. Chicago is hoping to change that as it becomes the first city to install an electric vehicle (EV) charging station powered with solar energy.

Solar Envy in Los Angeles?

Today Matt Kelly of the LA Alternative Transportation Examiner put out a response to Carbon Day and Coulomb Technologies’ joint press release announcing the unveiling of the first Networked Solar Charging Station for Electric Vehicles.

Kelly’s main argument is that Chicago has an average of 84 sunny days compared to 300+ in LA. On the surface, that’s true, but should it matter?

The fact is that any energy that we can glean from renewable sources is a good thing. If we can supplement electricity that we get from the grid, which is powered primarily by fossil fuels, even just a little bit then that’s a positive. Germany has a very similar ratio of sunny to non-sunny days as Chicago and yet they are one of the global leaders in solar technology implementation.

Kelly makes an excellent case for Los Angeles’ ability to get back into the solar technology race based on past leadership. “And remember LA in the ’70′s? You could hardly breathe due to the smog here, and it was this city that showed the world how progressive policies can clean up the air. Because of this, I find it hard to believe that any community will embrace this public-charging technology more so that Angelenos.”

We at Carbon Day believe that it is healthy to have an inter-city competition to become the greenest city in the country. We welcome the challenge and believe it is up to our leaders and our citizens to stand up and make the leadership choices that will enable us to create a lasting infrastructure for solar technology and other renewable energy sources. It will only create a cleaner city, country and world for future generations.

So, L.A., not only do we welcome the challenge but we are happy to collaborate!

Carbon Day is capable of delivering the same Solar Charging Technology coupled with Coulomb Technologies’ Electric Vehicle Charging Stations to any city in the United States. Please contact us for more information.
